While Elinor Dashwood is prudent, rational and responsible, Marianne Dashwood is passionate, excitable and emotional. Faced with similar pain of betrayal from lovers, Marianne is disconsolate and drives herself to a serious illness after being abandoned by an unscrupulous suitor. On the other hand, Elinor is stoic and refuses to reveal her emotions to anyone, including those closest to her.
